Autzen Stadium - Turf History

Oregon played their first game at Autzen Stadium on September 23, 1967. Prior to that, they played at Hayward Field. The original field turf was natural grass and only two years later the natural grass was replaced by artificial turf. The surface was replaced in 1976 and a new covering of OmniTurf was installed before the 1984 campaign. The field was replaced with a OmniTurf surface prior to the 1991 season. In 2001, Ducks played on NexTurf before upgrading its surface to FieldTurf in 2002, which has polyethylene and polypropylene fibers designed to resist extreme temperature and weather conditions.

Note: Oregon had tested the Field Turf playing surface in a December 1999 trip to Nike headquarters in Beaverton, where there is a workout facility with FieldTurf, and the Ducks had played at WSU's Martin Stadium in 2000 and liked the footing on the FieldTurf. In addition, FieldTurf uses a product called Nike Grind Nike Grind is part of Nike's Reuse-A-Shoe program that was started in 1993. The purpose of the program is to eliminate waste and close the loop on Nike's product lifecycle by collecting post-consumer, non-metal-containing athletic shoes of any brand, including Nike shoes that are as the granules between its fibers, and Oregon's connections to Nike and its leader Phil Knight.
